In 2019, UNESCO organised a conference on the empowerment of women and girls through education. More than 1,300 delegates attended, including delegates from the G7 countries, the G5 Sahel countries and invited experts and inspirational speakers, such as Nobel laureate and activist for girls’ education Malala Yousafzai.

Our visual thinkers Janita van Ginneken and Yara Rietdijk had the honour of going to the Paris conference to lend their visualisation powers to all the speakers.

Their mission: to visualise the best practices of education for girls!

Education for girls is one of the most effective investments for development. When girls are educated, their lives, those of their children, families, communities and countries improve. Health, education, social, economic and leadership prospects increase, while vulnerability to poverty, disease, mortality and violence decreases. Promoting the empowerment of girls and women through education is critical to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 5 on gender equality and SDG 4 on inclusive quality education and lifelong learning.

Visualising appeals to imagination

Yara and Janita visualised all the highlights of the conference in five drawings. By mapping such insights in a visual way, abstract ideas become recognisable, tangible and concrete. Visuals cross language barriers, allowing everyone to understand, participate and contribute!

Using the power of design, ideas come to life in creative ways. Drawings are more likely to produce an emotional response and help people see new opportunities. It helps to better imagine what is possible.

During the conference, the G7 signed a declaration underlining the importance of education for children in crises and developing countries, and pledged to invest $2.9 billion. This declaration helps girls living in the world’s most difficult places realise their right to education.

In short, hopefully our visualisations of the conference will soon become reality!
